It’s been a year since we began our adventure in the “Joy of Spanish.” I sincerely hope my reflections on colloquial language have been helpful to native Enlgish-speaking people who have moved to Mexico. It is rarely easy to adapt to a new country where people do not speak one’s mother tongue. The language difference looms far more important than even religion, culture, or food. I correct myself: language is a part of the cultural difference, probably the most important part. If we are unable to converse fluently — albeit not perfectly — in the language of the country where we live, we can never aspire to truly understand its culture. These articles have proposed an entertaining way to become better acquainted with the vernacular, the way Spanish is actually used in present-day Mexico. I wish the best to all the readers of UnasLetras, and I also invite you to read my two blogs. Both are in Spanish. La Caja Resonante de Sandro Cohen is a general interest column, but Redacción sin Dolor is dedicated to the finer points of the Spanish language. It will be a pleasure to continue hearing from you.
